Common Questions

Deck Railing FAQ

What railing material is best for my deck?

It depends on your priorities. Composite is the most popular — zero maintenance, classic look. Cable and glass maximize views. Aluminum gives you the slimmest profile. We bring samples to your consultation so you can compare in person.

Can you replace railing on an existing deck?

Yes — railing replacement is one of our most common services. We remove old railing, repair post connections as needed, and install a brand-new system. Most replacements are completed in 1–2 days.

Can I mix railing materials?

Absolutely — mixed material railing is one of the most popular trends. White composite posts with black aluminum balusters, composite posts with cable infill, or aluminum frames with glass panels. We help you design the perfect combination.

Does railing need to meet building code?

Yes — Virginia and West Virginia require railing on decks 30 inches or more above grade. Railing must be at least 36 inches high (42 inches for commercial), with baluster spacing no more than 4 inches. We handle all code compliance.

Can you add lighting to railing?

Yes — post cap lights, rail-mounted LED strips, and under-rail lighting. Trex and TimberTech both offer integrated lighting systems that wire directly into the railing posts. Best installed during railing installation or replacement.

How much does deck railing cost?

Pricing varies by material, linear footage, and complexity. Composite is the most affordable, followed by aluminum, cable, and glass. We provide free, detailed estimates with exact pricing per linear foot.

Do you offer financing?

Yes — Buildertrend and Upgrade with low monthly payments.
