Richmond Deck Railing Code Requirements
Deck railing is not just aesthetic, it is a safety requirement. Virginia building code (and both Richmond City County and City of Richmond) require railing on any deck surface 30 inches or more above grade. The railing must be at least 36 inches high (42 inches for commercial applications) with baluster spacing no more than 4 inches apart.
These requirements apply to cable railing too. Cable spacing must not allow a 4-inch sphere to pass through, which means cables must be spaced no more than 3 inches apart. Glass panels must be tempered safety glass. All railing posts must be structurally attached to the deck framing, not just the deck boards.
